Formed in the early 1980’s by Donna Hauge, the Monmouth Civic Orchestra (MCO) was a response to the decline of music education opportunities due to erosion of arts and educational funding in the public schools. This non-profit orchestra is dedicated to providing music performance opportunities for student and amateur musicians in an embracing environment that encourages community among its members, as well as great music making.
MCO prides itself on being a “teaching orchestra” as well as an agency that perpetuates music and arts culture for Monmouth and the surrounding Warren County. Amateur players who have a love for music but are missing a musical outlet have a place to gather and make music in an inclusive environment that encourages participation and musical expression. Citizens of Warren County have a place where they can escape their everyday worries and make music together.
High school students of Warren County have a unique opportunity where they can participate in this orchestra. Unfortunately, there are no string programs in the county. MCO fills this gap by providing students an orchestral experience not offered in the public schools. This unique ensemble offers the chance for amateur musicians of all ages to perform together, alongside select paid professional musicians, to provide great orchestral music for the residents of our area.
